4 Habits to Develop

4 Habits to Develop

Hook
A wheel that has four spokes represents the four habits that every Christian must develop. The four habits are Bible study, fellowship, worship and prayer. For the wheel to work properly, all four spokes of the wheel must be strong.
It is useless to argue as to which of the four spokes is the most important; all four are equally important. They must be in balance.

Key Verse
"And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers."- Acts 2: 42

Book
1 The apostles' doctrine is contained in our Bible. Therefore studying the Bible together is today's equivalent to continuing in the apostles' doctrine.

2 Breaking of bread does not simply refer to their having meals together. It refers mainly to their having the Lord's Supper together.

3 Eating the Lord's Supper is for the purpose of proclaiming the Lord's death until He returns. It forms an important part of our worship of God.

4 Some Christian groups may require you to be baptized before they allow yu to participate in their Lord's Supper. You should follow their requirements and seek to be baptized as soon as possible.

5 You need to join a church or a local group of Christians who meet regularly to study the Bible together, to have fellowship, to take the Lord's Supper together and to pray for each other.

6 You need to be steadfast in your practice of these four habits. Some things (such as lack of time) may hinder you from practising these four habits. Or you may have to give up some things (like a chance to make more money) in order to continue meeting with other Christians every week. The temptation is to simply practise these habits at home by yourself alone. Resist the temptation.

7 If your family prevents you from going to a church building to have Bible study, fellowship, worship and prayer, do not worry. Try and meet with Christians at another place to practise there four habits. Also, you do not have to meet with other Christians on Sundays. You can meet on a weekday. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that you must go to a church building on a Sunday to worship with other Christians. Find alternatives.

8 Even then, your own family may try to force you out of your house when yuo meet regularly with other Christians. You should try your very best to honour and obey your parents. However, when they leave you to no choice and make you leave the family, then remember that you already have a new family - the group of Christians you are meeting with.

Key Response: Continue.

1 Consider which church or group of Christians you want to join. (If possible, join the group that led you to Jesus Christ.) Grade them as strong or as weak in the areas of Bible study, fellowship, worship, and prayer:

Name of Church / Group

Bible Study

Fellowship

Worship

Prayer

2 What hindraces stand in the way of your practising these four these four habits? What can you do to remove them or to resolve them?
    • Lack of time
    • Fear of strangers
    • Distance
    • Shame
    • Don't see the need
    • No suitable church/group
    • Opposition/persecution
    • _____________

3 What sacrifices do you have to make in order to meet regularly with this group of Christians? Are you willing to make the sacrifice?
    • Time
    • Money
    • Popularity
    • Convenience
    • Leisure/rest
    • Lost of ‘face’
    • Safety/security
    • Acceptance by friends/family
    • _____________
    • _____________

4 For Bible study, start by reading the Gospel according to Mark. If you have already read Mark, then ask your pastor or follow-up guide which book you should read next.

5 For Bible study, learn to memorise all the 10 Things in this book. Better still, memorise all the key verses in this book. Tick the one/s you trust God to help you in your commitment.

    • I will memorise all 10 Things in this book.
    • I will memorise all the key verses of this book.
    • I will memorise all 10 Things and key verses within one year.

6 In some churches, fellowship means singing, eating and having fun with other Christians. These are not wrong, but they are not the main purpose of fellowship. What is the key purpose of fellowship? (See Hebrews 10:24,25 for the correct answer)

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.-Hebrews 10:24,25

7 Some Christians go to a church worship service every Sunday morning. But their lives are full of sin and unrighteousness. This is not true worship. What is true worship? (Read Romans 12:1,2 to get Paul's answer)

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as licing sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not comform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.-Romans 12:1,2

8 Which of the following is NOT involved in the breaking of bread or the Lord's Supper? (Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-29)

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognising the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgement on himself. - 1Corinthians 11:23-29

    • Proclaim the Lord’s Death
    • Anticipate Christ’s Return
    • Recognize the Body of Christ (the Church)
    • Examine one’s own manner of participation
    • Judge each other’s worthiness to participate
    • Remember the Lord’s death and suffering
    • Remember our covenant with God

9 Case study: A young man tells you that he needs not meet with other Christians to study the Bible, pray and worship God and that he can do all these things alone, at home, by himself. What should you tell him? (Read Acts 2:42-47)

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, prasing God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. - Acts 2:42-47

10 Write down the day of the week and the time of the day that you have decided to meet with other Christians to practise the four habits.

11 You will learn more about prayer in the next chapter of this book. Remember to be consistent in doing all the questions in the rest of the lessons in this book. Make a resolution to come prepared and with things to share and discuss with others. Do not come to your Bible discussion group with lots of blanks in this book.
